To improve the personal, social and academic growth of every student over time.

The Superintendent’s Bulletin will be posted on the third Friday of each month and is available on our website. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide relevant information pertaining to each of our school districts across the SAU. Please read the bulletin and use it to remain updated on district news.

Dear SAU 50 Parents, Staff, and Community Members,

Early Wednesday morning of this week, I was notified of a tragic snow tubing accident which occurred at the Sunday River Ski Resort. Portsmouth High School senior and former Rye student, David Kohlhase was killed in the accident on Wednesday morning.  Another student, Max Malila, was seriously injured in the same accident and remains in critical condition.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Max and we hope for his speedy recovery.

The entire SAU 50 school community extends its deepest sympathies to the Kohlhase Family.  David’s obituary is copied below.

Rye – David W. Kohlhase, Jr., 18, of Rye, passed away suddenly in a sledding accident on Wednesday, January 17, 2018. David was born in Portsmouth on December 27, 1999, beloved son of David W. Kohlhase, Sr. and Regina (Nappi) Kohlhase of Rye.

David was raised in Rye and was in his senior year at Portsmouth High School. He lived life to the fullest. He loved skiing, ice fishing, hunting and basketball, but his true passion was being on the water, fishing out of Rye Harbor.

In addition to his parents, family members include his brother, Lucas Kohlhase of Rye, his sisters, Danielle Jameson Grace and her husband Travis of Lee and Madison Kohlhase of Greenland and his parental grandparents, Edward and Jacqueline Kohlhase. David also leaves behind his nieces, Emily and Noviah and several aunts, uncles and cousins. David will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Friends may visit from 4 to 7 PM on Monday, January 22, 2018 in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Tuesday at St. Theresa Parish, 815 Central Rd., Rye. All those attending the funeral mass are requested to go directly to the church. Burial will follow in the Central Cemetery, Rye. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the David W. Kohlhase, Jr. Scholarship Fund, c/o People’s United Bank, 1555 Lafayette Road, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Rye School District News

Congratulations are in order to Ms. Amy Reynolds, Special Education Teacher at Rye Junior High School.  Amy was one of three finalists and recently was announced as the winner of the Professional Development & Training Honor Kindness Award, sponsored by the University of New Hampshire.  Fellow colleague Anne Gilbert nominated Ms. Reynolds for the award and wrote:

“Amy works tirelessly to support both students and staff in being kind, generous, and empathetic toward all. Her classroom at Rye Junior High School is cocooned in positive messages and uplifting statements, along with gently challenging reminders ("you don't know what someone else is going through, so always be kind..."). Students look to her to model those behaviors every day, and she does so with grace and style. Amy coordinates the staff "Sunshine Club", which recognizes monumental happenings in the lives of staff members. She often sees the positive in situations where the rest of us see challenges. She is a positive leader in our school building.”

Once again, congratulations to Amy Reynolds.
